Rossa featured in SPIVANKA documentary
07.2017

We had the honour of being featured alongside well-known bands "Lemon Bucket Orchestra" and "Ukrainia" in the "SPIVANKA" documentary sponsored by Rogers. After receiving a message in the summer of 2014 from the producers who came across our Facebook page, we met the amazing crew that interviewed us and filmed some of our practices, as well as our performances at the Toronto Ukrainian Bloor Street Festival, the Father Josaphat Jean Banquet, and the Holodomor Commemoration banquet. SPIVANKA explores the importance of preserving Ukrainian culture through music and song, particularly during the present day struggle in Ukraine against Russian invasion. For this reason, it was truly an honour being featured in it and we will continue to share our love for music and Ukraine! Слава Україні - Героям Слава!

Rossa in Montreal's RAZOM Magazine
08.2017

In late July, we were interviewed by Vanessa Miranda, a writer for Montreal’s RAZOM Ukrainian Magazine. The goal of the exchange was for the public to get to know us a little better.  We were asked about our individual Ukrainian backgrounds, how and when we met, how Rossa was created, as well as some fun facts about us in general (psst… Natalia has to chew gum during every single performance! It’s just a habit and a bit of a superstition!). To learn more about our group and read the full interview, pick up a copy of the August 2017 issue of RAZOM! Just to give you a little preview, here are some interesting facts about us that were covered:

  • We were all born in Montreal. Natalia and Sonia’s grandmothers (maternal side) were born in Montreal in the 1930’s, as were Dania’s grandparents making us all third generation Ukrainians.

  • We all met at the ages of 4-5 and were, in a way, meant to be friends. Natalia’s and Dania’s fathers were in a Ukrainian band together as teenagers, and Sonia’s father was also part of a 7 piece orchestra (Band 1945) for many years while her mother sang in various ensembles. Our parents all knew each other growing up in Montreal. We actually became friends in kindergarten at the Sheptycky Ukrainian School of Montreal.

  • Sonia’s mother, Vera Turko Kulycky, was the singing teacher at Ukrainian school and picked up on our love of song and natural talent.  She encouraged and helped us perform together at Ukrainian school concerts, and other events within the community along with other students. Over the course of the years, those of  us who continued to perform and were truly passionate about music remained, and hence the Rossa trio was formed!

Rossa sings at Ukrainian Embassy in Ottawa
05.06.2017

In May of 2017, we were invited to sing at the Ukrainian Embassy in Ottawa for the Ukrainian Canadian Students' Union (SUSK) Congress in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary. Along with members of SUSK and delegates from across the country, as well as Andriy Shevchenko, the ambassador of the embassy, in attendance, we celebrated Canada’s 150th birthday. On Friday evening, we sang both the Ukrainian and Canadian national anthems to open the evening, and performed a few of our own songs during cocktail-hour as guests enjoyed delicious food and wine. The following evening, we opened the zabava (dance) for the Toronto band Hloptsi Z Mista (X3M) that took place in the beautiful Lago Bar Grill and helped everyone get into the mood to party and celebrate! We performed four songs, two of which we sang with our good friend Dorotka Andrusiak. It was a very well-organized and dynamic event, and we are very happy to have been able to celebrate with such wonderful people!
